Bonsai No Sato Park and Resort

The peaceful and relaxing Bonsai No Sato Park and Resort, a botanical garden in Cauayan City, features an ever growing collection of over 300 exquisite bonsai trees, some on sewing machine stands.

Its owner, Ms. Librada Gatan-Africano, a retired school teacher, has been fascinated by bonsai, the Japanese art of growing and shaping miniature trees,  since 1986.

The grounds are also planted with colorful flowers, celosias (Konnichiwa Flower Garden), tall and graceful bamboo, fruit trees, ornamental plants, melons and strawberries. Every spot in Bonsai No Sato, is Instagram-worthy.

It also has an events center, for weddings, birthdays, and meetings, which can accommodate 400 guests.  The Japanese Village has a kominka built using traditional Japanese architectural methods.

Its Kissaten Restaurant offers halo-halo (Php150),  fresh from the farm fruit shakes, classy yet delicious pansit bihon and their bestseller Bonsai No Sato Pizza.

The garden also has a kiosks, two swimming pools, and picnic huts (Php300).  For children, there’s also a playground, trampoline, inflatable island, bikes and electric go karts.

The long-lived and slow-growing sampalok (tamarind, Tamarindus indica) tree, a great outdoor bonsai, is prized as a bonsai due to the very attractive rough bark that it develops.

The popular Argao (or Alagao) Taiwan (Premna microphylla), one of the easiest bonsai trees to culture, was imported to the country from Taiwan, by bonsai growers from Luzon, sometime in the 1980s and 1990s.

Tugas (Vitex parviflora), also called the Smallflower Chastetree or the molave tree, is a favorite bonsai specimen inthe country due to its relatively pliant stems, ease of propagation, tolerance to harsh climatic conditions and its gnarled and twisted trunks.

Every Thursday to Sunday and holidays, eat-all-you-can grilled food (pork, chicken, fish, Php299) is offered from AM to 9 PM. A live band plays every weekend.

For overnight stays, they have a Japanese villa (standard, family, Php1,900-3,600) and farmhouse with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, living room, dining room and a kitchen for Php10,000 (Php12,000 with exclusive pool).

This beautiful, one-of-a-kind island has a long white sand beach ideal for swimming and snorkeling, a large lagoon and a historical, American-era lighthouse at Murong-Buorongan Point.

A guiding beacon for sailors the latter was constructed on top of a sand bar with coral stones and rock corals making it a perfect spot for snorkeling and diving, with different varieties of soft and hard corals that give you an idea how beautiful the underwater world is.

Upon making landfall on the island, we were welcomed by a feast, at their open-air restaurant/dining area, of seafood (crabs, fish and shrimps) and barbecued delights, plus pako salad, salted eggs and turmeric rice.

After this filling lunch, some of the ladies did some line dancing to burn some of the calories they gained.

The resort also features modern, comfortable native-style beachfront cottages with wooden accents, airconditioning, lofts, private bathrooms and mini refrigerators.

Along the beach are cabanas and hammocks where one can relax and appreciate the crystal-clear waters and beautiful ocean view. Free-roaming geese and turkeys also had the run of the place.  The resort can be rented for your own exclusive use.

Formerly known  as San Benon Hot and Cold Springs (locals still call this place simply as San Benon), it is now owned and operated (starting April11, 2012) by ARAMARU Resort Corporation of Mr. Reyrold A. Mateo.  The resort was named the DDr. Eliseo Mateo, the original owner.

Located at the foot of 1,547 m. high Mt. Bulusan (one of the most active volcanoes in the world) in a forest 4 kms. northeast of the town, it has three man-made pools with a mixture of sulfuric, steaming (Hot Swimming Pool), lukewarm (Lukewarm Swimming Pool) and cool waters (Cold Pool).

This is a nice, well maintained place to balance and harmonize our body and mind, to unwind, relax, enjoy and find peace in a quiet and secluded place or just have a picnic with the family and friends during weekends and holidays.

As I came from a trek to two waterfalls, I decided to soak myself in the natural hot spring. Soaking in its hot, crystal-clear waters have many health benefits.

A good therapy, soaking in the heated pool is extremely beneficial to those who suffer from arthritis plus the buoyancy of the water relaxes the muscles (increasing their range in motion), supports and reduces stress on the joints (encouraging freer movement), and increases the heart rate (while lowering the blood pressure than raising it as does other forms of exercise) with less strain on the heart. A nice place to visit.

After our hike to two of three waterfalls at Zoe’s Resort & Eco-Adventure Park in Bulusan, we again boarded our coaster for the short 9.3-km. (20-min.) drive to The Pili Haven along the highway in the adjoining town of Irosin.

The Pili Haven, an agri-eco tourism site operated by Angkie Agri Enterprises, features everything about pili (Canarium ovatum), from its multiple uses to how they were processed and eaten. The pili tree, a low-maintenance crop, is the rarest nut in the world and the Bicol Region’s main produce.  It grows in rich volcanic soil. The Pili Haven has a beautiful view of Mt. Bulusan.

Upon arrival, we proceeded to their Resto Hut where a merienda awaited us.  Here, we were all welcomed by Ms. Myra Zandra Navarro-Gestida.  The brains behind Pili Haven, she was formerly an OFW working in Dubai who decided to return to the Philippines to take care of her mother who was diagnosed with amyitrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Myra also took over the already established but struggling Vicky’s Pili and Food Products.  The enterprise recovered and became even bigger.   In 2017, it was awarded as DTI Go Lokal! Top Seller.

Lomi, a delicious and filling comfort food, was served to us was.  We also all tried out a delectable array of bili-based delicacies -pili tarts, mazapan de pili and pili macaroons.  We were also served their signature kalamansi-flavored lemonada de ricah, a sort of a margarita with Himalayan salt on the rim of the glass.

Resto Hut also serves s other specialties made with local ingredients that feature pili oil such as spaghetti with oil, panic with pili, and others. They say that actress Heart Evangelista loves going to this restaurant.

The place features a nursery for pili, a pili plantation, and a plant for the production of pili oil, pili sweets (Mazapan de Pili, Honeyed Pili, Sugar-coated Pili, Buding, Molido, Pili with Himalayan Salt, etc.), Pili Oil, and pili souvenir items.

Within the grounds is a restored red jeepney.  The first jeepney of the owners (Navarro family), it was used this as a transportation in the 1990’s to deliver pili en route to Irosin-Bulusan-Sorsogon.

They also have cottage rooms for accommodation and several Instagrammable sections for photo shoots and selfies. After our merienda and before departing The Pili Haven, some us shopped for some pasalubong at Vicky’s Pili and Food Products which sells local handicrafts, tea, juices (melon juice, pandan coco juice, etc.) and their other products.

The Pili Haven also has a 24/7 commuters’ restaurant (Rapid Eats and Take-Away) that serves breakfast (spamsilog, cornsilog, mami, etc.), snacks and lunch and dinner (kinunot, ginataang langka, ginataang kalabaw, pork humba, igado, pakbet, chicken curry, pork sisig, Bicol express, tortang talong, kaldereta, pangat na isda, lumpia gulay, sinigang na bangus, paksiw na isda, ampalaya guisado, etc.) for travelers.

Arrival at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar (Bagac, Bataan)

Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar

From Le Charme Suites, we all boarded our coaster for the 68-km. (1 hour and 45-min. drive), via the Gov. J.J. Linao National Rd., to Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar (Spanish for “Acuzar’s Philippine Houses”) in Bagac, Bataan province’s newest and certainly most upscale beachside resort.  This beach resort, hotel, convention center and heritage destination rolled into one was designed to resemble a historic Filipino town, was to offer us a taste of the Philippine’s past come to life.

The gated stone entrance, with its keystone jauntily carrying the resort’s elaborate coat-of-arms, welcomed us. The resort, covering an area of around 40 hectares (99 acres), lies in a vast sand-filled estuary bisected near the beach by a small river, with seaside farms stretching off to the north.

From the driveway, we espied, across the Umagol River, Casa Maranao, a torogan (a Maranao royal clan house) from Lanao in Mindanao. Built in 1873, it was owned by Sabino Lakowa and its last owner was Dimaawan, the second child of Sabino.  It features panolong, wing-like carvings that flare out from its floor beams, symbolizing the wealth and importance of its occupants.  There are also okir, beautiful carvings that depict the naga (serpent or dragon from Sanskrit literature), and pako rabong amarilis (asymmetrical growing ferns).

This resort was painstakingly built up in over ten years of intermittent construction.  It has a vast, open-air depository of planks, stone blocks, and tiles salvaged from their original owners or bought from junk shops in Manila.  From these materials, future houses and structures in the complex will be constructed.

Comprised of a collection of several dozen “heritage houses” and buildings, each representing an aspect of national Filipino history, they are an outcome of an organic process of selecting and emplacing salvaged ancestral houses from all over Luzon that were specifically evaluated and chosen based on their individual cultural, historical and architectural value and features.

The buildings at Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar range in style from mansions to wooden stilt houses. With its rear ringed by the forests of nearby Mt. Natib and its front splashed by the South China Sea, these ancient wood, tile and stone structures were given a new lease in life, reincarnated as vacation houses, offices, restaurants, and hotel suites and facilities in Las Casas.

It had its beginnings in 2003 when real estate magnate and architect Jose Rizalino “Jerry” Acuzar, the owner of New San Jose Builders, Inc., decided to open an estate just outside of his hometown of Balanga.  Ultimately settling upon a 400-hectacre tract of land near the fishing village of Bagac, he built a quaint manor home and a series of small cottages.

When he was young, Jerry, on his way to school, had memories of passing by the decaying mansions along F.R. Hidalgo Street in Quiapo.   In 2008, he was fatefully offered parts of a historic home from the Cagayan Valley. Subsequently, in an effort to restore it back to its former glory, he dismantled and reconstructed the building on his estate.

Later on, he was offered heritage homes that were being sold and he decided to transplant these endangered specimens of colonial heritage architecture to his beachfront property. Acquired and transported from varying locations across the country, each historic structure was meticulously dismantled from their original location before being reassembled and carefully restored inside the premises of the Las Casas Filipinas by a skilled group of architects. In cases where an authentic reconstruction was not possible, materials that were as close to the original were used to complete the project. Needless to say, each building’s legacy is as unique as its architecture.

However, this method of heritage conservation has been contentious among conservationists since they believed that their original communities could have benefitted from the structures had they been restored on site. The heritage park’s proponent Gerry Acuzar claimed that he went with the method in order to save the structures from decay and neglect.

While the estate remained private, many heard about what he was doing and wanted to see his reconstructed heritage houses. Seein an opportunity to make the location accessible to the public, Acuzar continued financing his work in restoring the heritage houses. As Acuzar’s team of artisans grew, the destination gradually expanded into 63 heritage homes and 34 structures built in the style of the historic houses on-site.

In March 2010, Acuzar debuted his private estate as a beach resort, opening it to the public as the Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar and placing it under the management of Genesis Hotels and Resorts Corporation.  It has since established itself as one of the most luxurious holiday destinations in the world, every year hosting hundreds of enthusiastic cultural heritage visitors. In early 2020, due to community quarantine measures imposed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Las Casas Filipinas temporarily closed but eventually reopened in July 2020.

The work accomplished by Acuzar and his team had earned the resort great praise. In 2021, the heritage park was lauded and recognized for its preservation efforts and their continued stewardship by the Department of Tourism, under Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.  That same year, Historic Hotels Worldwide also bestowed the resort with its Award of Excellence for “Best Historic Hotel in Asia/Pacific.” Since 2017, this fantastic historic resort has been a member of Historic Hotels of America.

We first registered ourselves at Casa New Manila, an American-era house built in 1926 by Italian-American Joseph Francisco.  It once stood at Balete Drive for 90 years and was bounded by Espana Extn. (now E. Rodriguez Ave.) and Campanilla, Sampaguita and Ilang-Ilang Sts..  It was later bought by Manuel Alcuas y Tuazon and Rosario Araneta y Zaragoza, scions from two prominent families in Manila. It had wide open verandas (where we had scenic views of the Umagol River and parts of the resort), extended eaves and its original fireplace.  From here, we were to tour the resort by raft.

Our first stop was Amarela Resort (officially opened in May 2006), an advocate for local art and culture since its inception as a venue where Boholano heritage, art and culture could be preserved and showcased.  Amarela (from the Spanish word for “yellow”).  Perched on a cliff , this beautiful boutique hotel, with commanding views of the azure sea and the longest white sand beach in Panglao, is a two-time ASEAN Green Hotel Award recipient in Bohol.

Upon arrival, we were welcomed by 73 year old resort owner Atty. Lucas “Doy” M. Nunag, former chairman of the Bohol Tourism Council. Since he was a practicing lawyer, the affable Doy has been collecting art pieces and antique décor (old wood accents such as latticework, balusters, windows and doors), old implements and furniture from Bohol.  Boholano historian Marianito Luspo accompanied us.

Started as a vacation house, Amarela Resort was the first resort project of Rosario “Chichi” Vasquez-Victorino (a former colleague of mine at Manosa-Zialcita Architects) who also designed two houses of Doy in Manila.  In its conceptualization, design and operation, the resort incorporated Bohol’s rich heritage and culture, making it a venue where people can truly experience local flavor through artistry and craftsmanship.

The main house, where we were first entertained, used repurposed and reclaimed old, beautiful and incredibly durable hardwood (the imposing, turn-of-the-century, solid wooden doors; handcrafted lattices; wooden shutters, balusters and flooring), taken from a house of a famed sculptor along the way to Antequera (Doy’s birthplace), using it as decorative elements and giving it the Boholano spirit.

Doy also found old furniture, some of it needing repair.  A talented carpenter (who also doubled as a habal-habal driver during the day) from Antequera (a town known for its craftsmanship in woodworking and weaving) to refurbished these as well as craft new furniture using traditional designs.

Its museum, a strong commitment to the promotion and appreciation of local art as well as the preservation of Boholano culture and heritage, houses the majority of the local art and antique collection of Doy, allowing guests to appreciate Filipino and Boholano art and craftsmanship.  Most of the paintings and sculptures were created by Boholanos.

The lovely works of the late Hermogena “Nene” Borja-Lungay, who studied under Fernando Amorsolo and a a classmate of the late National Artists Napoleon Abueva and Jose T. Joya, showcase old Boholano traditions as well as renderings of local fruits and flowers.

Works of prominent Bohol-based Guy Custodio, who usually paints religious themes on old recycled molave hardwood, has revived the traditional “Bohol School” painting style.  On the other hand, the subjects of Sherwin Tutor are historical events done in a highly detailed figurative style. They include a painting of the two kings of the fallen Dapitan Kingdom located at Tagbilaran Strait. Tere’s also a portrait of a mother and child.

Displayed all over the resort, as well as in the museum, are Baroque-style urnas, some done in triptych (three-panelled paintings hinged together so that they could be closed).  These carved wooden shrines for religious icons, of varying sizes and styles, are evidence of the rich spiritual beliefs of Boholanos.  Also on display are home tools and antique kitchen utensils and equipment such as a duwang (wooden basin), palo-palo (laundry paddle), lusong (mortar), ganta (measuring implement for grain, sugar and salt), all made from molave wood.

Beitou Thermal Valley (Taipei, Taiwan)

It was raining heavily when we departed Yangming Park for the short 6.6-km. (15 min.) drive to Beitou Thermal Valley, a valley located on the foothill of Yangmingshan National Park.

It is one of the sources of acidic sulfur hot spring in the area and, historically, was considered as one of the eight attractions and one the “12 great sights of Taiwan” during the Period of Japanese Occupation.

Xinbeitou Village occupies a lush valley that is home to 1200 species of plants, 110 species of birds and 160 varieties of butterflies.

The park is a good place to relax or go for a stroll. The rain stopped when we arrived at the resort area.

Walking along a boardwalk, past a souvenir shop (with a café inside selling hot and cold drinks), we could already feel the temperature rise (having the highest temperatures of any in the Datunshan volcano group, the highest temperature of the springs here ranges from 80-100℃).

We also noticed an eerie sulfuric steam rising from the surface of the bubbling, green-tinted pond which blankets the Thermal Valley year-round. Playing around in the breeze, the steam gave the valley a surreal sulfuric atmosphere and a frightening quality, which has given rise to nicknames such as “Ghost Lake” and “Hell Valley.”

In the past, visitors were once allowed to soak their feet at certain points as well as boil eggs in the hot springs.  Both practices have since been prohibited, not only to protect the water quality but also to keep tourists from falling in and boiling themselves.

Located beside Beitou Hot Spring Park, the spring water here is high in the radioactive element Radium which, in the past, underwent a corrosive reaction with andesite  rocks on the river bed about 150 meters downstream, creating layers of rare, cream and white diamond-shaped crystals called hokutolite (named after Hokuto, the Japanese name for Beitou), also known as Anglesobarite or Beitou rocks, the only mineral in the world to be named after a region of Taiwan. They can only naturally be found in only two places: Beitou and Tamagawa (Akita Prefecture, Japan).

To ensure the protection of these natural rarities, the “Beitou Rock Conservation Area” has been established in recent years. Thus, visitors to the Thermal Valley not only get to experience “hell,” but also gain insight into some rare radioactive rocks. Its mineral water also contains PlasterAluniteJarositeRealgar and  Sulfur and its pH value is between 1.4~1.6.   As sodium carbonate tend to be highly acidic and corrosive, the springs have also been called the “Green sulfur springs” and “Sulfur heads.”

Today, the main source of the “white sulfur” hot spring water used in Beitou hot spring establishments is the Liuhuanggu and Longfenggu thermal valleys located further uphill in Yangmingshan National Park.

How to Get There: The only metro-accessible hot spring in Taiwan, a two-station line connects Xinbeitou, Taipei City’s only hot spring village, to Beitou station on the Danshui line. From Taipei’s Main Station, go north on the Red Line, to Beitou. Once there, change to the Pink Line by going downstairs and back up again on the other side of the platform and take it one stop to Xinbeitou (New Beitou).

Balesin Island Club: Bali Village (Polillo, Quezon)

Bali Village, located along the same beach as Balesin Village (but at its northernmost end), has unique villas, set away from the beach, that draw their inspiration from the salakot (the traditional Asian farmer’s hat). This is the only village with two swimming pools, one on each side of the clubhouse.

The villas, traditionally Balinese in form, have peaked roofs and long, graceful eaves. Though the villa’s layout is the same as Balesin and Phuket Villages, it has a wraparound porch that provides a relaxing ambiance. The bathroom also has a huge, additional outdoor shower that occupied almost a quarter of the back area.

Bali Village’s two water villas, the hottest place to stay in Balesin Island Club, are always the first to be booked.

The Warung, Bali Village’s signature clubhouse/restaurant, has an authentic Indonesian ambiance, thanks to the Indonesian decorative objects and intricate friezes adorning its walls. Its carved main door came from a real Balinese house.

Its specialty dishes include traditional Indonesian and Malaysian fare such as laksa, nasi goreng, beef rendang,  sambal udang, nasi lemak and satay ayam (chicken skewers marinated in lemongrass and is served with sambal and peanut sauce and Indonesian yellow rice).

‘Les Restaurants de St. Tropez’ has several small dining areas for lunch or dinner – Le Girelier, La Voile Rouge, L’Escale and Place des Lices.  For added privacy, there is the striking, 12-pax Le Neptune, an enclosed dining room that looks out to sea.

Specialties of the house include pissaladière (a French type of pizza with olives, onions and anchovies on a flaky crust), escargots de Bourgogne, a traditional French onion soup, a light and healthy salade nicoise, croquet madame or monsieur; boeuf Bourguignon; lobster bisque and entrecôte au poivre. For dessert, there’s signature la tarte Tropezienne, a soft brioche cake with custard cream.

The Crêperie, at the second floor, is a popular breakfast spot for all Balesin visitors with views of the swimming pool and the beach and sea.  They offer sweet and savory crêpes with café au lait (or any way) and fillings of bacon, eggs, gruyere or the ubiquitous banana and Nutella combination plus coffee, tea, cool juices and shakes.

The Nirvana Lounge, the little hideaway on the main floor, is an intimate backdrop for cocktails or a post-dinner tête-à-tête.  It has hexagonal ceiling mirrors and exotic yet cozy furnishings  and draws inspiration from the sophisticated French bar scene.
