After our tour of Wat Traimit and Wat Pho, we next moved on to the 7,200 sq. m. (1.8 acre) Gems Gallery International, an ISO certified gems gallery. Open in 1987, it is said to be the world’s largest jewelry and gems center. Here, we watched skilled, in-house Thai artisans cut, polish and set each precious stone to create exquisite pieces of jewelry.

Its eye-catching showroom also displays thousands of world-class natural gems (diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, topaz, etc.) mined from Chanthaburi and Kanchanaburi provinces; pearls as well as unique bracelets, necklaces, rings, bangles, earrings and other jewelry masterpieces.

BENJAMIN “BENJIE” LAYUG, an architect by profession (he finished his B. S. Architecture degree from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 1982), is an avid reader, traveler and free-lance travel writer in his spare time, contributing articles to Travel Update, Philippine Daily Inquirer, COLORS, TODAY, 7107 Islands Magazine, Business Day, Bluprint and the Business Mirror.

Now a senior citizen, he is probably one of the oldest, if not the oldest, active travel blogger in the country today. He also has a lifestyle blog called F.Y.I.:Firing Your Imagination (www.firingyourimagination.blogspot.com). Benjie has traveled to two-thirds (53) of the country’s 81 provinces and over 20 countries in 4 continents.
